| 課程概述 | This is a course in macroeconomic theory at the intermediate level. Macroeconomics is concerned with the behavior of the aggregate economy. In the course we will be examining macroeconomic data and studying models designed to help us understand those data. This course will be taught from an equilibrium perspective. This means we will analyze environments in which economic agents optimize and in which aggregate consistency conditions hold. Understanding the concept of equilibrium will then be the single most important task of the course. We will apply this equilibrium insight to discuss the theory of long-run economic growth and short-run economic fluctuations. Growth theory describes and explains how the main economic aggregates (such as output, employment, inflation, interest rates) evolve on average over long periods of time, whereas theories of short-run fluctuations (business cycle theories) analyze the short-run movements of economic aggregates. Once we have understood how the macroeconomy works, we can start analyzing macroeconomic policy, in particular fiscal policy (what are the macroeconomic effects of taxation, government spending, budget deficits, or surpluses) and monetary policy (what happens if the Central Bank increases or lowers the Federal Funds Rate). By the end of the course you should be able to construct a critical opinion about economic issues using good economic intuition and knowledge. |
| 課程目標 | The primary goal of this course is to help you develop a consistent way of thinking about some key macroeconomic phenomena. In particular, we will try to address the following questions: What drives economic growth? What explains the large differences in economic performance across different countries of different times? What is the role of policy in economic growth? What are the determinants of consumption and saving? How do they matter for both the long run and the short run? Why are people unemployed? What should the government do about unemployment? Why does macroeconomic activity fluctuate? How do different shocks and policies affect employment, output, investment and consumption over the business cycle? Should the government try to stabilize the economy against business-cycle fluctuations, and how? Is it better to restrict what the government can do even if it is fully benevolent, or should we give full discretion to the government? What causes financial crises? What is the role of financial markets in the macroeconomy? We will shed light on all the above questions. However, do not expect a simple answer to any of these questions—there is no simple answer! Rather, what you should aim for is to develop a framework for studying these questions, along with some empirical guidance. We will review some of the key lessons research in macroeconomics has reached over the years—lessons that will help you understand why certain policy questions remain the topic of hot debate in both the academic and the political arena. |
| 課程要求 | The course presumes knowledge of both micro and macro at the principles level, as well as elementary differential calculus and high school level algebra. It is helpful, though not necessary, to have taken intermediate micro. You should also be comfortable with a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel. 6 problems sets and one group presentation 20% Three in-class exams 75% Class participation. 5% Unless you had a serious medical problem (e.g., hospitalization), do not expect any exemption or any kind of leniency with regard to deadlines etc. |
